Senate President Steve Sweeney issued the following statement today urging the administration to take swift and decisive action to prevent a strike by NJ Transit and severe damage to New Jersey’s economy: “The state’s economy has struggled to recover from the recession and a crippling strike to the state’s transit system will cause real and lasting damage to New Jersey residents and the regional economy. The administration must take swift and decisive action to prevent the threatened shutdown by NJ Transit.” “This looming crisis didn’t materialize overnight. The administration had five years to come to terms with a fair contract for the employees, but has failed. They cancelled the ARC tunnel, refuse to renew the Transportation Trust Fund and have failed to recognize the critical importance of the state’s infrastructure to the economic conditions for working people in New Jersey. The years of indifference to the state’s transportation needs now threaten to cripple transit and choke off economic activity. The immediate financial costs would be tens of millions of dollars per day and the long-term damage to the economy would be even worse.  “There is no contingency plan that will prevent fiscal and economic harm. The administration should be working around the clock to prevent a strike, not just to do damage control.”
