Gov. Chris Christie on Wednesday signed legislation intended to give small businesses a boost by helping them get funding. The bill (S123) creates the Small Business Bonding Readiness Assistance Program within the state's Economic Development Authority, which doles out millions in financing and billions in tax credits to businesses in the Garden State.

The new program within the EDA is intended to help small businesses secure surety bonds so that they can easily bid on state and federal work, Christie said. "EDA is going to provide support services to small businesses," he said.

When the bill moved through the Democratic-controlled Legislature it cleared the Senate after a 39-0 vote and a 72-0 vote in the Assembly.  The idea for the legislation came from talks among businesses, lawmakers and the governor's office, Christie said. "This all started with a conversation," he said.
