GFOA of NJ Awards Two Scholarships for 2009

Ross Versaggi, Scholarship Chairperson annouces the awarding of the annual GFOA Scholarships to various students deserving of our assistance as they pursue their endeavors into higher education. This year we received thirty five (35) applications. As in the past, all appeared to be needing assistance which made it difficult to select.

Based upon careful review, I recommend distributing the $5,000.00 budget to Two individuals. Although many of the applicants were deserving of an award the below two individuals appeared to be the most deserving based upon their financial information and other criteria. They will each receive a check in the amount of $2,500.00.

The Scholarship Committee for the Government Finance Officers Association is proud to announce the award of scholarship to two outstanding students in 2009. Tiffany Lynn Kirk of Freehold, NJ will be attending Monmouth University in the Fall majoring in Health Studies. Beverly Beaver of Merchantville, NJ will be attending Rutgers University School of Law to become an attorney, specializing in services for child victims and juveniles. Both candidates exhibited high achievement in their studies along with excellent references. The Association is happy to award $2,500 to each of our winners to help them realize their scholastic goals..

The purpose of the GFOA of New Jersey's Scholarship is to encourage and promote the advancement of education by providing scholarships and other assistance in institutions of higher learning to children of deceased or disabled persons who have worked in government in the State of New Jersey.

This year's awards continue GFOA's scholarship program which granted two awards in 2009 in the amount of $2,500 each. Our awards have totalled in excess of $50,000 over the years.

Awards shall be made primarily on the basis of financial need, but may take into account prior academic performance. Initially, no single student will receive more than $2,500 in financial assitance, but this amount may expand in the future as the amount of available funds increase. The award will be paid directly to the qualified educational institution and there will be no limitation governing its use except that the individual must be an enrolled student for the year in which the scholarship is awarded and the amount is limited to $2,500.00 per individual per year up to a maximum of four years.
