A candidate for certification must have a degree in accounting or finance. There are a series of eight classes and a state administered exam that must be completed and passed for certification. The classes range from budgets, to accounting, purchasing etc. and all applicable rules and regulations that a finance officer are expected to follow.

Once certified, a finance officer is required to enroll and pass regular continuing education credits that the Department of Community Affairs must approve.
The GFOA of NJ has taken a leadership role as a professional organization in attracting and promoting new talent to our profession. We have an active fundraising campaign for our scholarship fund for candidates interested in our profession. The GFOA has strong links to New Jersey's top educational institutions to attract finance candidates to the program as a great career choice.
