President's Message

Members of the GFOA of New Jersey: 

 

 
As incoming President of the GFOA of New Jersey I would like to thank all of you for your vote of support during the election process.  The participation in the election process set a new record with almost 300 members making their voice heard.  I am humbled by your support and accept this position with great honor and look forward to serving the membership well.  While this is the President’s message I also want you to know that the entire Executive Board functions as a team with the same goals in mind.  We have already begun the planning process and have set some hefty goals.
 
Over the past several months I have had an opportunity to talk with many of you and have listened to your ideas.  More involvement with the organization was the number one request that was made.  We plan to evaluate and restructure many of our existing committees.  The new structure will include more participation from members to support the board members.  This method has proven to be successful in the past as you have seen with the Fall Conference Committee.  The Fall Conference Committee is made up of three board members, one from each of the regions, who then brought aboard 2 additional regular members from each region to participate.  The results were obvious, new and creative ideas for our conference.  Our plan is to take the same approach with the other committees.  If you are interested in participating on a committee or becoming more involved in another way, please let myself or any other board member know.
 
The Women’s Conference was also a new innovative idea that came from several of our female members.  This was an opportunity to invest back into our membership.  This first time ever conference was a huge success.  The feedback that we received was nothing but positive with requests for continued events in the future.  Other professional organizations have reached out to us asking about this event with the intent of putting on their own.
 
Article I of our bylaws states our purpose.  The cliff notes version of this Article is that we are here to help educate our members and make them better.  The Fall Conference is intended to generate additional funds that will be reinvested back into other programs for our members.  This includes events such as Area Socials, Mini Conferences and the Women’s Conference.  By being able to invest some of these proceeds back into other events we are able to keep the costs of attendance down which provides a benefit to our members.  We are always looking for new ideas.  If you have any ideas that you would like to share with us we would be happy to discuss them and see what can be done to put them into action. 
 
I truly thank you for this opportunity to serve as the President of the GFOA of New Jersey and look forward to involving many of you in this adventure.
